Marshmellow Challenge: A Fun Way to Learn About Strategy

Yesterday, the MBS Bachelor students of the fifth semester enjoyed a quite different lecture in their strategy course: Prof. Dr. Patricia Kraft encouraged the students to participate in the so called Marshmallow Challenge.

It is a fun and instructive design exercise that helps teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity.

The simple task: In eighteen minutes, teams must build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow needs to be on top.

Some lessons which emerged:
1. a solid fundament (in the experiment and in the strategy work) is essential
2. teams which planned not too long reached the highest constructions
3. team mixture is crucial
